On February 5, 2025, the Statistics Agency under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan hosted an online meeting with experts from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

For Information: Within the framework of the initiative “Data Decade for 2030 – Strengthening Institutional Capacity of National Statistical Offices in the Asia-Pacific Region to Leverage Innovative, New, and Big Data Sources for Official Statistics in Support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” ESCAP provides technical assistance to the Statistics Agency and has selected Uzbekistan as a priority country for implementing the project “Alternative Data Sources for Price Statistics.”

As part of the project, ESCAP experts are supporting the development of methodological skills to integrate web data and EPOS (Electronic Point of Sale) data from the State Tax Committee into the processes of compiling the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Additionally, they provide recommendations on data architecture and processing requirements to ensure the effectiveness of this integration. The meeting was attended by the Senior Economist of the ESCAP Statistics Division, Richard Tonkin, ESCAP big data experts Eric Diben and Sergey Gusev, and staff from the central office of the Statistics Agency.

The primary objective of the meeting was to outline a joint action plan and the next steps for implementing the “Alternative Data Sources for Price Statistics” project. During the meeting, participants also discussed improving existing statistical data sources within the project framework, price statistics, data collection, processing, analysis, dissemination of data infrastructure, the practice of using geospatial data in official statistics, and the development of open data.
