On May 17-18 this year in the city of Almaty of the Republic of Kazakhstan, an regional conference "Effective Governance for Economic Development in Central Asia" is being held.

This regional conference is attended by representatives and specialists of more than 150 government agencies, from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, and Great Britain.

The regional conference is held within the framework of the Effective Governance for Economic Development (EGED) program funded by the UK government through the UK Department of Foreign, Commonwealth and Development and implemented by the World Bank and the Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development.

This regional conference is also attended by a delegation headed by the Director of the Statistics Agency under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Begalov Bahadir Abdusalomovich.

In his introduction, the director of the Statistics Agency noted the positive progress made in the field of statistics in Uzbekistan:

- reforming the system, the widespread introduction of digital technologies into activities, including the improvement and creation of electronic information resources of the system based on the latest standards in order to ensure openness and transparency (Statistical Integrated Information System - SIAT), internationally recognized observations (Multi-Indicator Cluster Observations - MICS ), International Comparison Program - ICP) progress made in the organization and implementation, measures taken to thoroughly prepare for the population census;

- achievements in terms of openness and transparency;

- the experience of Uzbekistan in establishing effective relationships between the participants of the national statistical system in terms of statistical processes, in particular, the production and analysis of statistical data and their use in order to form public policy;

- creation of statistical programs, identification of information needs and ensuring public participation in the use of statistical data, as well as the exchange of other results achieved.

This session discussed best practices and new methodologies for collecting statistics, as well as ways to use evidence to inform public policy.

The session also included a presentation of a new online course on information literacy for experts and decision makers in the field of public policy formation, researchers and citizens of Central Asian countries.

The conference participants focused on topical issues such as: the relationship between data production, analysis and use for public policy purposes, progress in the implementation of evidence-based policies, and approaches to strengthening the role of civil society, resource allocation and public administration.
