On October 2 of this year, the National Statistics Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan organized a training seminar on “Data Governance” at the National Statistics Committee.

The seminar featured a presentation by Mr. Azmiddin Rakhmatov, an expert of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and a specialist in open data, information technology and data governance.

The presentation addressed issues related to the step-by-step establishment of a data governance system in government institutions. In particular, it covered the legal framework for this process, the use of international standards, the inventory and assessment of existing information systems and datasets, as well as approaches to their effective utilization.

Information was also provided on the use of administrative data for the compilation of official statistics, opportunities to enhance the practical value of open data, and the development of high-quality data repositories for analytical purposes and artificial intelligence.

Particular attention was paid to ensuring the quality, completeness and relevance of data, developing metadata and catalogues, and clearly defining the roles and responsibilities of staff responsible for data. Issues related to inter-agency data exchange, information security and the protection of confidentiality were also considered.

The training seminar focused on strengthening knowledge of modern approaches to data governance in statistical activities and promoting their practical application.
