On June 10, by videoconference, the SESRIC Center for Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training for Islamic Countries, together with the Turkish Statistical Office (Turkstat), organized a seminar on the use of big data, non-traditional data sources and methods for official statistics.
This webinar is part of the CESRIC webinar series for the exchange of statistical experience in the member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
The event opened with opening remarks by the Director of the Department of Statistics and Information, Dr. Atilla Karaman, and the representative of the Statistics Office of Indonesia, Mr. Setiya Praman.
On behalf of the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Statistics, the head of the Department of Information Resources and Interactive Public Services, Shahboz Samadov, took part in this seminar.
The aim of the seminar was to consider the application of big data and non-traditional data sources and methods, such as satellite imagery data, mobile phone data, scan data, ship tracking data using an automated identification system (AIS), Earth observation data, which can improve some aspects the quality of statistics, such as timeliness and relevance, without compromising impartiality and methodological soundness.
The audience was introduced to Jordan's experience in using big data for official statistics; Experience of Statistics Malaysia in price analytics (PI) - data collection using web crawling; the experience of Saudi Arabia's General Directorate of Statistics in using employment data and comparing it with unemployment for various indicators; and the practice of applying geospatial information and collecting price data using web scraping from ESCWA representative Mr. Majed Skainey.
At the end of the webinar, the participants agreed to continue close cooperation on all topical issues of statistical practice.
